The Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA)

Was enacted in Ontario, Canada during the year, 2005. The AODA specifically, was created to aid in the increase of accessibility within Ontario’s public arenas by the year 2025.

As such, by creating a deadline that was twenty years away in the future from its inception, the AODA allowed for plenty of time for course correction, strategy, edits, and fixing of inaccessible facilities.

So what does this mean for you and your business?

Well, As the AODA aims to raise the standard for accessibility in the area for those with physical and mental disabilities, it also applies to a broader spectrum of populations and facilities.

The expectations of the AODA apply to all individuals who are an employer of Ontario residents. Furthermore, the standards apply to all who provide accommodations, own or occupy a building, and provide goods and/or services, for starters.

The Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act has taken on the WCAG 2.1 AA as guidelines for making sure that websites are authored and structured for web accessibility creating an inclusive manner to work as congruent as possible with those relying on assistive technologies.
